This bathroom was straight out of the seventies, which was the complete opposite of the homeowner’s style. Throughout this client’s house, pieces of furniture and art were meticulously chosen to represent her style. The home she and her husband had created was beautiful, to say the least, and it was time to fix this last eye sore – the guest bathroom.

At this point in the game, Harris Renovations had several bathrooms and a couple kitchens under our belt. Beyond a doubt, we were experienced and skilled enough to handle the job. However, this project presented opportunities that we had never had before. By the end of this project, we redefined our company and have never looked back!

Almost always, gutting is the first step. That was a no-brainer in this flashback to the disco era. Everything had to go. Once the room was stripped, we could plan and place new studs. This process was very detailed, as Casey had to foresee tile layout, niche sizes, mirror placement, and many other details to ensure the end product would be symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing. In the picture above, you see the symmetrical placement of all electrical boxes over the vanity. He added extra studs so the outlets, light fixtures, and switches are even.

Much to the homeowner’s surprise, they needed a plumbing update. The copper pipes feeding their bathroom were the wrong size, limiting the waterflow to the fixtures. As a standard practice,  Harris Renovations added sturdy, high-quality shut-off valves for the sink and the tub.

A First Time for Everything

How did this job redefine Harris Renovations? What exactly made it a turning point? To begin, this project was full of many “firsts” for us. Just to name a few (clockwise from the top left picture)…

  1. This was our first shower-tub combo installation. Previous homeowners did not replace their tubs or they had converted to walk-in showers. If this was going to be the first tub a homeowner put me in charge of purchasing, I decided to go big or go home, right?! The alcove in which we installed the tub, allowed for a 36-inch wide, soaker tub. Huge!
  2. For the first time, we got to use GoBoard, the amazing alternative to cement board. Traditionally, tiled showers and tub alcoves are backed with cement board, but Harris Renovations is committed to avoiding this product due to the harmful effects of silica dust (to us and the homeowner). The KBRS system we use for showers incorporates GoBoard and is completely waterproof.
  3. Another first – radiant heat floors! Yet another opportunity to educate ourselves on a product that is efficient, easy to install, and worth every penny.
  4. What is probably Casey’s favorite first – using his laser level to lay the tile. No, we aren’t the only contractor who does this, but there really aren’t many… at all! Laser-leveling is an extra step, but it guarantees perfection, which is kind of our thing.

Dare I Say "3D Rendering"

This project also challenged us to offer our first attempt at 3D renderings! Because the client was so involved and specific about the final design, we felt it was necessary to show her the plan before putting it together. We didn’t own 3D software yet, so Casey, with all his amazing Photoshop skills, whipped up some pretty impressive designs.

To the far left, we illustrated the exact layout of the final niches. Casey was adamant that the niches fall in line with the tile, but we knew the size had to be functional, too. They were tediously planned.

Also, the client invested in the higher-end Delta Trinsic collection for her shower tub combo, and we wanted to offer a rendering of the fixture layout. This allowed the homeowner to give feedback on the placement of the wand, which she needed lower for dog-washing purposes.

Finally, we had the chance to work with our amazing cabinetmakers to create a custom laundry-chute door. It’s not everyday that a bathroom contains a laundry chute, but the homeowner was definitely attached to hers. Casey’s twenty-two years of custom cabinet-making was a crucial key to creating his plan that he submitted to the cabinetmaker. He designed the chute to match the exact size of the surrounding tile, essentially replacing one tile with the chute. Genius, if you ask me.

Meticulous Planning

Our client was extremely hands-on throughout the entire process. She was not a micro-manager in any way. Instead, she offered ideas and feedback that made our job easier and the end result better. She provided inspiration pictures and listened to our thoughts, as well. Though we’ve always worked side-by-side with our clients, this project was truly a collaboration from conception to completion.

The custom, farmhouse-style trim that she wanted for her existing window would be a labor of love for Casey, but he definitely delivered. The same goes for the custom radiator cover that he made. Read on for the after pics!

As you can see in the left picture, the farmhouse window trim had to be planned very carefully, down to the notching of each tile into which the trim would cover. The new trim fit like a glove!

The laser-level planning paid off, for sure! From the first cuts to the final result, everything laid out exactly as planned!

Have you ever seen a tub with chromatherapy? Yes, it’s a thing! The manufacturer of this tub was offering the chromatherapy feature for free the month I purchased the tub, so, of course, I added it into the package! Initially, the homeowner thought it was funny, and almost silly, that I had included chromatherapy. However, the day the tub was fully installed and they could add water, the first thing they played with were the lights! Haha! Their nephews LOVE them! Don’t knock the chroma!

The After Pictures

We love this “after” image of the bathroom because it embraces everything the homeowner wanted. The grey shiplap, the bling in the sconces, the casual basket of towels, the minimalist, wall-mounted faucet over the semi-vessel sink. I could go on, but the picture truly speaks for itself.

Though this vanity was not built by our cabinetmaker, Casey did play a large role in the end result. The original maker of the vanity and floating shelf initially installed the pieces on a day that we did not work. When Casey arrived the following work day, he noticed some features didn’t fit the standards of the space. He unmounted the vanity and shelf and brought them to his shop for a makeover. In the end, he dismantled every piece of the vanity, stripped and sanded all surfaces, polyurethaned the walnut to a glass shine, and reassembled with new, soft-close hardware.

These after pictures are a wonderful collection that showcase the vanity area of the bathroom. Clockwise from the top left:

  1. A drop-in vessel sink does not protrude above the countertop as much as a true vessel sink. This allows the countertop to be a traditional, comfortable height while keeping the sink inline with the user. The wall-mounted faucet is classic and timeless in its black finish.
  2. Finally! The finished laundry chute in all its glory! We hate to brag (no, we don’t), but this very image was featured on Houzz in an article about laundry chutes. The inset handle keeps the door flush to the floor while making the door easy to open. And, of course, the door is soft-close, so no slamming shut is happening here.
  3. The pop of brass was a total surprise to us! When the homeowner brought these sconces to the project, we were not expecting this metal finish at all. But, it really opened our design eyes to the beauty of mixing metals.
  4. The floating shelf was a brilliant addition by the homeowner. But, also featured in this picture is the custom baseboard that Casey built for the entire room. In keeping with the farmhouse theme, he maintained a flat surface board. He added a touch of “flare” with the top cap that extends over the width of the base.

The end product is truly a timeless classic. We know the homeowner will enjoy this space for years to come. Above that, we learned many things. The need for 3D renderings, the advantages of high-end materials, and the business model of “concept to completion.” Since this project, we have approached our clients as a true design-build firm, offering design assistance well before the renovation begins. This remodel played a major role in defining who we are today. We are forever grateful.

Thoughts from the Homeowner

It did not take long for us to know we made the perfect decision in choosing Harris Renovations for our bathroom remodel! Casey and Wendy both came to our home for the original consultation. The decision, in my mind, was made that day even prior to the estimate.

We had never met either of them, I had only based contacting them on their previous reviews. We can say with all honesty, there was no fluff added to anything we had read. This is a time when things were actually as good as they appeared to be! Casey is a true craftsman. This is evident in not only his attention to detail but his artistry. He was able to transform my discombobulated thoughts into a beautiful guest bathroom! Wendy, the glue, the therapist, the designer, the bargain hunter, the make-it-happen gal! She held my hand through the entire process and made an experience that neither of us were looking forward to – dare I say fun!

We have a 4-5 year plan for our home remodeling goals and knowing that we’ve got Harris Renovations to return to throughout the process brings an excitement and security to those goals. Remodeling is not cheap but, being 100% satisfied with the finished product makes the saving over the years well worth it!

Thank you Casey, Wendy, & crew for an amazing renovation to our home!
